Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film takes a look at what life was like in the late 60’s for somebody working within the show business and is loosely based on real events.

Rick Dalton is played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Cliff Booth is played by Brad Pitt. The two share the relationship of actor and stuntman. When it starts it shows Rick’s career has hit a bump in the road as he is struggling to stay relevant. He was once the lead protagonist in a TV show now he is having to take lesser roles. If Rick doesn’t have work, then that means Cliff doesn’t.

Margot Robbie is one of the characters who existed in real life. She is Sharon Tate who was a popular actress in the 1960’s and was slain by the Manson family. In the film she is neighbors with Rick.

An interesting decision he made was including the presence of Charles Manson. Although he himself is only portrayed in once single scene his name is brought up many times. The girls in the Manson family are shown throughout the movie roaming the city. Cliff interacts with Pussycat and eventually gives her a ride to Spahn Ranch which was a real place. In this scene Tarantino attempts to show the cult life of the Manson family. The compound has an eerie feel to it not knowing what could happen to Cliff. He gets away safely, but they meet again after a time skip of six months. After Cliff gets home from his time working on movies in Italy the Manson cult are plotting to murder the people inside the Sharon Tate household. In a turn of events Rick comes outside to confront them and they eventually choose their house as their victims. The outcome is far from the reality of what happen in the summer of ’69. Each member of the family is slain by Cliff’s dog and Rick. This Tarantino twist shows an alternate reality where the murders never happened reminiscent of Inglorious Basterds.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood shows how hard success can be to reach in an industry where you are aging. Hollywood always wants the youngest and newest stars. This period piece paints the picture of what life would have been like 50 years ago in LA. Tarantino pays close attention to detail from the vehicles to the usage of cigarettes and even the technology.

This is rumored to be his last film after a report came out that he was retiring. It isn’t confirmed 100% but Tarantino fans are wishing this not to be true. Below you can watch an in-depth interview with the film’s stars and Tarantino himself.
