How the New Three Point Line in College Basketball Changes the Game

Writer's picture: Brennan TimberlakeBrennan Timberlake

This year the NCAA has decided to move the three-point line back from 20 feet, 9 inches to 22 feet, 1 ¾ inches.

The new distance correlates with FIBA international play. By moving this back, it will decrease the amount of three-point shots attempted and made. The NCAA hopes that this will help teams when they are on offense to be able to spread the ball around the court more. With the old three-point line it made the playing space fairly cramped.

Another result of this change is the fact that players will be better prepared for the next level. With the NBA’s line being only about a foot different as compared to the nearly three feet a year ago players won’t have to adjust as much.

Although there isn’t much data yet because the season has just started it will be interesting to see how coaches change their game plans.
