For those of you who don't know the Ballon d'Or award is given to the top soccer player in the world.
Lionel Messi won the 2019 award for the sixth time which is the most ever. For the last ten years Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been fighting back and forth for this accolade. Before this year they were tied at five.
The second place player this year was Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool and he also plays for The Netherlands in international play. He had an outstanding year as a defender. Usually an offensive player wins this award much like the Heisman.
This year was the closest race between first and second place. Messi won by just a few votes.
