The Oath Movie Review

Writer's picture: Brennan TimberlakeBrennan Timberlake

The Oath stars Tiffany Hadish and Ike Barinholtz who play a couple that is preparing for a Thanksgiving dinner with their out of town relatives.

This film starts out by showing a TV broadcast that shows the President insisting that United States citizens should sign an oath of loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief before the country. It almost directly mirrors the reality of the country in 2019. There is a resistance against this and it begins to tear peers and family members apart.

Barinholtz plays the father of the household named Chris. He also wrote and directed the film. His character is very outspoken of his rage against the oath and his wife, Kai who is played by Haddish, shares his views but is less vocal. Chris' outrage against the situation causes turmoil at the dinner table after finding out that everybody in his family has chosen to join the movement.

Throughout the film Chris is regularly checking the news and seeing riots and protests against the movement. He continues to bring up his strong opinions throughout the weekend the family stays for the holiday and it slowly but surely ruins the the weekend.

The day after the Thanksgiving dinner a special government force called "Citizens Protection Unit" shows up to his house claiming that he has tampered with somebody's right to sign the oath. Although the news states that there is no law against refusing to sign it, the CPU shows up with no warrant to ask him questions. Chris continues to tell them to leave and they have no right to be there and the two officers refuse. Things begin to escalate and things take a turn for the worst. Both of the CPU agents end of tied up and severely beaten.

The movie ends as they check the news one more time showing that the President has stepped down from office and the oath has been abolished. This means that all CPU forces are no longer constitutional. The Oath shows a correlation with Trump's America and how the people are being split up between the two sides of the political parties. Although there is some violence in the film there is a comedic undertone. The movie is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
